World Green Economy Summit to focus on ‘Innovative Technologies for a Sustainable Economy’

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the steering committee of the sixth edition of World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2019 that is organized by World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO) and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in collaboration with international partners, has announced that the forthcoming edition of WGES will be held under a new theme – ‘Innovative Technologies for a Sustainable Economy’  on October 20th and 21st in Dubai.WGES will be held in conjunction with the 21st edition of Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) and the fourth edition of Dubai Solar Show and the sixth edition of the Green Week. This year, the summit will focus on three key pillars including sustainable development, international cooperation towards a green economy system and adoption of green innovative solutions across varied sectors.

The steering committee of the sixth edition of WGES held a meeting chaired by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Managing Director and CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and Chairman of WGES, where the committee meeting discussed the objectives, agenda and pillars of the summit that will focus on supporting sustainable development journey, increasing international collaboration to move into a global economy and adopting green systems and latest innovation. The meeting was also attended by HE Ahmad Butti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy United Arab Emirates, Eng. Waleed Salman, Vice Chairman of WGES; Dr Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources, DEWA; Abdul Rahim Sultan, Director of the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO); and other committee members responsible for organising the summit.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said “The summit is in line with the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to promote sustainable development in the UAE, which is a vital aspect of the UAE Centennial 2071, for the UAE to be the best country in the world by that date. Additionally, the summit aligns well with the UAE Vision 2021, Dubai Plan 2021 as well as our continuous pursuit to achieve the goals of Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 which indicates that 7 percent of Dubai’s total power output will be derived from clean energy by 2020, rising to 25 percent by 2030 and 75 percent by 2050, that will ensure Dubai becomes a global hub for the green economy.

Al Tayer said, “We aim to achieve from the new theme – ‘Innovative Technologies for a Sustainable Economy’ to focus on key elements to reach a genuine and successful green economy. Our aim is to underscore key pillars, including sustainable development, international cooperation towards a green economy system and adoption of green innovative solutions that will reinforce the position of Dubai as a global capital of green economy and sustainable development.”

During the meeting, opinions and suggestions to advance the summit were discussed in addition to key success factors that will drive the growth of green economy and sustainable development which will help in diversifying the sources of energy, particularly the clean energy. Also, opinions and ideas on the agenda of the forthcoming summit were discussed. In addition, the meeting also looked at key speakers, participants, seminars to be held, as well as comments raised by teams.

HE Al Tayer was briefed on the advancements being made to attract global influential participants, from ministers to senior government officials to opinion leaders from private and public sectors and experts in green economy and sustainable development and advanced technologies.

HE Al Tayer stressed the need for enhancing communication and continuous coordination between the financial, logistics, and media committees to ensure the event’s success.
